as children by jerry sandusky. penn state university agrees to a multimillion dollar settlement with more than two dozen men who say they were victims of jerry sandusky. in june, the former assistant football coach was convicted of sexually abusing ten victims on school property. in an interview with 60 minute sports, prosecutors admit there are many more. >> there are dozens more. >> yeah. >> dozens. >> dozens more. >> yep. >> reporter: attorney mike casey represents seven of the alleged victims who settled with the school. >> they are pleased to now put it behind them, but it's a remarkable achievement by cor ray justice young -- courageous young man. >> reporter: the scandal cost joe paterno his job and three former university officials have all been indicted for their roles in covering up sandusky's abuse. >> it was a lose, lose, lose situation for penn state. >> reporter: legal expert professor says the settlements are fair and the safest move for both sides. >> the cost to litigate this

and the negative publicity that would be drawn out over a long period of time, frankly this makes the most sense for everyone. >> reporter: the president of the university released a statement calling the settlements a step forward in the healing process. rodney erickson says, we cannot undo what has been done, but we can and must do everything possible to learn from this and ensure it never happens again at penn state. and a liability insurance policies are expected to cover the settlements. university officials say studentuition money will not be used. reporting live, meghan mccorkell, wjz eyewitness news. >> thank you, meghan. since his conviction, jerry sandusky has maintained his innocence. he has appealed his guilty verdict. a maryland man is charged with selling drugs on the massive online black market silk road. jacob george, iv is charged

with selling heroin and other drugs over the site. the feds shut down silk road earlier this month. they say buyers and sellers traded more than $1 billion in illegal narcotics on that site. a grammy-winning pop star appears in court. chris brown is charged with beating a maryland man outside a hotel. it's not his first violent attack. rochelle richie was in the courtroom for brown's arraignment tonight and has details on the charges. >> reporter: that's right, vic, it seems trouble finds chris brown wherever he does. a felony charge was reduced to a misdemeanor simple assault for he and his bodyguard. both men entered a not guilty plea. ♪ turn up the music, because the song just came on ♪ turn up the music if you can't turn it down ♪ >> reporter: he's a grammy- award winner who has topped the charts across the country as a pop sensation. but monday chris brown found himself off the stage and in front of a judge after being

charged with simple assault in d.c. chris brown's troubles started here at hotel washington just a few yards from the white house. according to police reports, he punched a man in the face after he tried to take a picture with him. brown guarded by law enforcement and bodyguards raises a peace sign to the crowd as he left the courtroom leaving his attorney to do all the talking. >> christopher brown committed no crime. we understand that his security acted to protect mr. brown and mr. brown's property as he is authorized to do under district of columbia law. >> reporter: brown's music career has soared over the last few years, but his behavior outside of the studio has some fans questioning if he's really learned his lesson from the violent past. brown is still on probation for domestic violence case in which he reportedly beat up his ex- girlfriend, pop star rihanna. >> you don't have to always react to everything. >> reporter: brown entered a not guilty plea in the d.c. assault. the allege victim in the case

is from beltsville. the police report says he suffered broken bones in the nasal area. brown is due back in d.c. for a second court appearance on november 25th. we're live tonight, i'm rochelle richie, wjz eyewitness news. >> thank you. the judge also ordered brown to undergo drug treatment and report to his probation officer in l.a. dr. conrad murray, the man convicted in the death of michael jackson is a free man tonight. he was released after midnight after serving half of his four- year sentence. he was jackson's personal doctor and was sentenced in 2011 for giving the fatal dose of pro poe fall. he was released early for good bow haver. super storm sandy recovery efforts continue. sandy swallowed the boardwalk and its iconic roller coaster. countless homes and businesses were destroyed, some without electricity for months. jessica kartalija is at the waterfront with a look at the

recovery here in maryland. >> reporter: the first anniversary of sandy. >> this is the highest i've seen the tide up in my lifetime. >> we went down here about half an hour ago. we had to turn around. >> reporter: the super storm hit the state with record- breaking winds, rain and snow. >> they are very worried about here is the storm surge, they're worried about water, flooding. >> reporter: 11 marylanders killed with some 47 million dollars in damage. >> we've provided homes and we've rebuilt homes for people. >> reporter: one year later, $19 million is going to maryland towns hit the hardest. >> the money will be coming from the federal government and coming to the lower shore. the money will be distributed on the basis of need. >> reporter: the money goes toward the reconstruction of homes, businesses and their economy. >> it was devastating. the entire town was flooded and when i say the entire town, i mean the entire town,

everything was flooded. >> reporter: in coffins floated out of graves, the town dock swept away. >> that's where our bay commerce comes through every day. >> reporter: now, they're still rebuilding. >> we know the ocean city pier has taken quite a beating as well. >> reporter: still plenty of work to be done. more than 200 maryland moments are still in need of repair. >> if we could get the help we need to start rebuilding. >> reporter: with the latest, the senator received a total of $47 million in federal aid. in feels point, i'm -- fells point, i'm jessica kartalija, wjz eyewitness news. 70 families are still on a waiting list to have their homes rebuilt by a faith-based relief group. three men behind bars charged with a murder at a hotel. a suspect held up a pregnant hotel clerk and demanded money in oxen hill. the restaurant owner, jesse

chavez, was then confronted the suspected and was shot several times. chavez died at the scene. police say the three men arrested are facing first and second degree murder charges. three local families are heartbroken tonight as new details emerge about a murder/suicide in anne arundel county. one of the victims a decorated baltimore firefighter is being called a hero even in the last minutes of his life. derek valcourt has more. >> reporter: at the engine 14 firehouse in southwest baltimore the doors are draped with black bunting, a tribute to 27-year-old firefighter andrew hoffman. hoffman and his new girlfriend, 26-year-old marie hartman were gunned down inside his glen burnie home around 1:30 in the morning sunday. hartman's younger sister escaped out a window. the killer was hartman's ex- boyfriend, baltimore police officer christopher lee robinson who took his own life after the shooting. hartman, the mother of a 6-year- old, leaves behind a devastated family.

>> we just want answers. we want to know why this happened. >> reporter: hoffman's death hits especially hard for the city fire department where he's been hailed as a hero, recognized for his quick action earlier this summer in helping save this 3-year-old boy who wandered away from home. he was heroic even in his final minutes. >> the night he was killed, he did all he could to protect his girlfriend and her sister, who survived the terrible ordeal. >> reporter: wjz was there as his uncle collected some items from andrew's home needed for funeral arrangements. his father released a written statement on behalf of his family saying our hearts are absolutely broken over the loss of our son, brother, grandson and uncle. it's hard to imagine going forward without him, but we know andy died a hero. that is the way he lived his life and we couldn't be prouder of him. family members still wjz the funeral services are being set for saturday. firefighters plan to be part of that service to pay tribute to their fallen friend. derek valcourt, wjz eyewitness news.

university police tell wjz their thoughts and prayers are with those impacted by the tragedy. more problems for a contractor operating local speed cameras, forcing them to void 1,400 tickets in baltimore county. last february the county claims so xerox failed to recalibrate a dozen cameras. an investigation by our media partner, the baltimore sun, shows the cameras were taken out of commission. the drivers were never alerted. xerox paid the county more than $57,000 in compensation. players joined fans in getting into the halloween spirit tonight. there is michael orr and author jones posing with dressed up fans. orr is dressed as the most interesting man in the world from the commercials. people came out for the 14th annual goodwill gridiron halloween party and dave anbusters. the scarecrow and dorothy from
